This week in The Barna Minute, we’re taking a look at how younger churchgoers in the U.S. have engaged in church—both in-person and digitally—during the pandemic.
The landscape of church engagement opportunities changed drastically with the onset of the pandemic, introducing a mix of both non-traditional and traditional experiences to engage churchgoers. When looking specifically at Millennials’ engagement in church during the last year and a half, data show that after in-person prayer experiences (28%), Millennials lean heavily toward digital engagement (digital prayer 25%, volunteering online 24%, digital spiritual formation on my own 23%). Still, one in five Millennial churchgoers (21%) note they haven’t engaged in any of these ways.
